About Hamilton
Hamilton was founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and made its name on railroad-grade pocket watches accurate enough to keep trains from colliding. It supplied US forces through both world wars, then in 1957 released the Ventura — the world's first electric wristwatch, with a shield-shaped case that Elvis Presley made famous. Production moved to Switzerland under the Swatch Group, but the field-and-aviation catalogue still reads like military issue.

What to look for
Details worth checking before you trust a dial. None of them certify authenticity on their own.
- A hand-wound Khaki Field with no date and a 38mm case is the closest thing to the original military spec
- Sandwich-style matte black dial with large Arabic numerals and a 24-hour inner scale on field models
- 'H' caliber codes (H-10, H-40) indicate the modern ETA-derived movements with extended power reserve
- A Ventura's asymmetric case should have crisp, mirror-polished flanks — the shape is hard to fake convincingly
Facts
- The Ventura's electric movement was powered by a battery in 1957, a full 13 years before quartz reached the market.
- Hamilton designed the Khaki Field Murph for Interstellar, complete with a ticking seconds hand used as a plot device — then sold it as a production model.
